Better quality 7-pole RV connector?

Can anyone recommend a high-quality 7-pole (blade type) RV connector? I am tired of replacing the common Pollak plastic connector every few years. The terminals corrode badly, the spring on the flap usually breaks within a year, the stupid white grommet at the back has no chance of sealing out moisture -- it's basically a piece of crap. The only alternative I have seen is the "EZ Connector", but I'd rather not change to a connector that is not compatible with most trailers.

Does anyone make a better quality connector than Pollak? I'm thinking it should have brass contacts (not plated steel or whatever's in the Pollak unit), a flap that seals better, and a better sealing arrangement at the back. Also, would be nice if it was easier to wire -- the Pollack unit is a pain to stuff back together when all 6 wires are connected, especially with a fairly stiff ground wire.

Suggestions? Sources?
  • Bought a Hopkins "Endurance" model today -- this appears to be better made than the standard cheap-o models, although it still has the crappy rubber grommet in the back that has no chance of sealing. I will glop some silicone in there when done. I haven't installed it yet, but it appears to have more room inside the housing, and the housing slides on easier than the standard units. So overall it looks like it's a 50% improvement. I looked at the all-metal one, but wondered if the whole blasted thing would just corrode to death.

I wish some manufacturer would have the sense to supply these with a stainless steel (or aluminum) mounting bracket, and s/s hardware. The plated junk doesn't last, and the powder coated bracket isn't much better. I will throw out the fasteners and use stainless instead, so I can get the stupid thing apart again in 3 years when I have to replace it again.

Still not really satisfied ... there's an opportunity for someone to make a much better product.
  • Bargman makes a decent 7 pin connector with a right angle molded cord its listed in their fifth wheel section.

Try Hopkins. Or the metal ones from Pollak.

Yes, I've always had good success with the "Hoppy" (Hopkins) brand.
  • I've used mine towing 5th wheel FT (traveling every week) and not one problem with corrosion/spring/sealing.

Last truck used it frequently for many years....no problems

Is your pigtail pulling/putting strain on connection when making turns ?
  • I found much heavier connectors and wires at a Trucks and Trailers USA.
They offered the cheaper ones too. Wally World had the heavier one too, at that time. I had Trucks and Trailers cut the hole and silver solder and shrink tube seal the connections to the truck. the lead wer much heavier than even the truck wiring. the lid over the pins was solid stainless, I think and it had a watertight big rubber seal. They had cattalogs of all the electrical stuff including lenses and fixtures and so on. Several of the larger RV Dealers have catalogs too, of all the common fittings, fixtures, lights and lenses and a hundred and one other things. They give them away.

Contacts are not plated steel, they are brass. Brass does corrode.
  • Wow....never had any issues with Pollack. I shoot a bit of silicon around the white bit and make sure the connecter is sprayed with wd40 or something like that and is placed facing down when not in use.
