What I Recommend... as a Stand Alone battery charger for 200 amp hours or more of batteries (or half that in Starting batteries) Progressive Dynamis 9260 Plug in (Comes with a power cord)
Yes. this is a RV type Converter. But it is also a very good SMART battery charger Unlike many "Smart" chargers it will auto-switch back to BOOST (Bulk) if needed.
What I use: Primary. 9180 with charge wizard (Essentially same as above.. identical if you add the optional dongle)
Backup: Deltran Battery Tender Plus.. now this is not the old little 1-4 amp battery tender. It's a full service box
It has 4 modes counting off
0:off
1: Tend. just an amp or two.. Like the little ones
2: Boost 20 amps. with smart shut down (Must be manually initiated)
3: Jump start 70 amps. (have never used)
about 100 bucks at Auto Zone et-al.
My story
9180 (OEM) died late one Sat. Figured it out Sun Noon. Odds of getting another 9180 on Sunday approach zero. Got the Deltran and popped it into 20 amp mode. Using my Smart Phone and the Deltran AP I was able to monitor the charge Took till NOON on Monday when I unplugged and hit the road for Tekonsha MI
Halloween AM (yup it was that time of year) I drove up to Marshall (Car only) walked in the Parts/Service door and the gal ask "Can I help you" I pointed to the 9180 and said "DEAD".. Through those doors
Inside We did the Can I help you/Dead bit only this time it was On my desk.
238 Dollars later (Tax included) I was on the road back to Tekonsha and did a Temp Install.. (Finished a while later when the weather was better in South Carolina than it was in MI) Figure I'm' good for at least another decade :).
