brake away brakes

Question about the brake away battery/controller.
I had a 16' flat bed trailer, with brake away system. If the pin got pulled the brakes came on. You needed to check the battery once in a while, and recharge if necessary?
I replaced that trailer with a new 20' and the brake away brakes on that one have a battery charger built into it. Problem is if I don't unplug the battery when not in use the battery will run down.
Is there something wrong with it, or is that the way that are?

    It charges while driving, if I don't forget to plug the battery back in.

    Disconnect the charger....see what happens. If its the charger running it down, maybe a different charger,....or just use a charger when needed

    I'd suspect the charger is not working if the battery still runs down.
