Briggs & Stratton P2200 Gen Runs 75 Amp Charger

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/briggs-stratton-2200-watt-inverter-generator-3992900p.html#srp

Got one of these on sale for $549 (regular about $800), in hopes it would run my 75 amp adjustable voltage battery charger/converter. On the Honda 3000, that charger pulls 1693VA according to the Kill-A-Watt, and this gen is rated for 1700 "watts" (120v x 14.2a) running.

It runs the 75 amper ( earlier reported it would not, but that was because I did not have the choke in the right position---embarrassing!--so this is a correction and an apology)

Kill-A-Watt results--( gen was 124.7v unloaded) with charger doing 75 amps, set to 14.6 volts

119v, 13.67a, 1150w, 1626VA, 0.70 PF

Which put it just right for the 1700VA rating of the gen. I like this generator. It is not too loud at all, and it fits in the MH's compartment where the big Honda 3000 would not. Can carry it with one hand. The 3000 took two people.

I used to have a Generac 1000. (Enclosed traditional generator) really a Briggs & Strattion rated 1000 watts. ran my 80 amp just fine with very hungry batteries.

NOTE: if batteries are not all that hungry (Mine were BELOW 50 percent SOC) it takes less power to run charger. and Progressive Dynamics is not supposed to be PF-Corrected (Means it pulls more volt-amps)

Also note that Volt-Amps is volts times amps IT DOES NOT EQUAL Watts.

Watts = Volts * Amps * Power factor (A number never more than 1)

So a 1200 VA device may only be 900 watts. Or less.
  • ARAGHH!! I forfeited how many dollars when I was forced to go Honda.

    Road Apples grade joshing!
  • Had to update/correct this thread. I really screwed up with the choke business! Hope not too many folks acted on the earlier info :(
  • OP - Curious, what are you using for a charger/converter ?

When you are down close to 50% state-of-charge, how long does it take to get back to 100% at 60A and 70A ?
  • Same story as with an eu2000i. 60 amp converter is all it can support. I'm still waiting for the mainstream converters to have pf correction. I'm currently using a prosine 2.0. I don't need the inverter, but rather use it because of its pf corrected charger.
  • Why would the charger pull almost 1700w when charging at 75a?
