I'm becoming more and more convinced these little units are worth their weight in gold (just don't tell the retailers that!).
Being cv and cc, I don't see why it wouldn't function the same as any ac-dc cv/cc power supply, holding in cc mode, at its current limit, until voltage reaches the set-point, and then switching to cv mode while amps taper.
And if bucking down from 36v to 14.8 seems too extreme, do it in two stages, with a gizmo for the gizmo, like you said. Just buy 3 of the $12 ones I linked to, and go nuts.
My only concern is how well they would handle the fluctuating input voltages from a solar panel?
