BFL, why does your solar array produce such high voltage, anyway? Is it because of voltage drop and wire size?
No, solar panel voltage goes up with rated wattage and it is normal for a 230w panel to have about 37 volts Voc. (same brand 260w is 38v) The voltage drop occurs on the wire going from the panel to the controller (when there is current of course), so at the controller input the voltage is a bit less than at the panel.
I need to get the voltage with little or no current down to 32v so by covering a panel cell or two, that might be enough de-rating (making it a lower wattage panel in effect)
The panel amps rating is 8.3 so that will be de-rated too, but then the buck gizmo output amps should still be more than 8.3 even with the de-rating. Or not! We'll see.
I just want to try it and for $13, it will be worth the fun even if it doesn't work.
