Bump or indent

Ordered two new tires thru FMCA for rear position when I saw this after RV was washed and waxed because of the shine. Arrived at Purcells in Yuma for new tire install and inspector said it was OK, an indent. It does feel that way except at one end. date is 2609 I usually go eight years on these Michelin XRV What do you think?

Are you saying the new tires are from 2009? If so, I would refuse to have them installed. Recently put new Cooper's on my truck. Told the installer that I only wanted tires less than 4 months old. He said "Almost impossible to get tires that new. I have to order them from the distributor and won't know the age until I get them in." I told him to call me when he had the tires with the date code I wanted. Called the next day and told me the tires were in and had a date of 1115.

No, the one with the dent and inside mate to be replaced by two new ones with current dates.

There was a Similar Post on Michelin tires a few days ago.

Old Biscuit gave a link to a good article on Tire Rack giving the reason- basically, indents are fine- the radial belts overlap there. A bulge means the belts are damaged (on an older tire), or there is a gap instead of an overlap (in new tires)- either one is bad.

So- indent = good. Bulge = bad .

    Then it's a feature :)

  • You might put the picture and the explanation and the inspectors statement on a piece of paper, and get a notarized signature from him (or her), along with the name of the tire store, all the letters and numbers on the tire, etc.

If the inspector is unwilling to sign, then contact the manufacturer and tell them you need a replacement tire because the inspector won't vouch for it.

Added: You might inspect their inventory and see how common this uneven sidewall is.
