Camper newbie, Dometic 461 issues..

Hi all,

Ive owned my first camper for a couple months now.. a creampuff 84 8.5" Vanguard..

On our inaugral trip a month ago, everything worked great, ran the fridge on the two 20lb lpg tanks for 4 days.. Had to turn it down from ~4-5 as it was freezing our food.. and it cooled right down quickly (3 hours or so of driving and it was good)..

Got it home, turned off the tanks, emptied the fridge and that was it..

Started our second trip this weekend.. Got to the site and took about 5 minutes to get the fridge to light.. and after a few hours it was still warm.. Did some research and discovered about levelling.. So went to the local lumber yard and picked up a torpedo level and a few chunks of 2x8..levelled the truck (from freezer pan), relit the fridge and tried again.. Still warm..

Pulled the outside cover, have a nice clean blue flame in the centre of the stack, the coil zigzag of tubing at the back is hot for all but the top zag which is only slightly warm, the straight down tube behind back down into the bottom canister -was- cool to the touch earlier, now its room temp at the top..

Any suggestions i can try, have already had to throw out some food, hopin to save the rst of the trip :)

Thanks,

Cakes..

  • Those of that era seemed to live 10x longer than newer stuff. Glad you are chilling again. :)
  • Haha, dont get me wrong, Ill be perfectly understanding if i do need to replace it.. I likely will anyways when reno'ing this winter.. But given how well it worked last trip I was surprised at the sudden failure..

Might have it licked though.. Despite what i figured was a good flame, i did notice a lot of rust under the burner.. So i shut er all down, pulled the burner and dumped a ton of powdered rust out..

Reassembled and after 20 mins the freezer box is quite cold already.. Fingers crossed..

    Thanks for the replies everyone,

    cakes..
  • Takes at least 8 hrs for a RV fridge to reach temperature .
Much slower than your home compressor operated fridge but that's the nature of the beast
    Good Luck, Mike
  • It is a 1984 Fridge! It just might get going using the Remove Turn Clockwise thing over the next three Days ! OR You can spend a few $$ and replace the fridge !

30 years is more than enough life for a Fridge!
  • From a warm start up expect 12-24 hours cool down. Start with a gallon of ice at 5F from home freezer helps speed up things. On the negative thought side your cooling unit may be leaking down. We had to do our 1992 in 2010.
