MEXICOWANDERER
Feb 17, 2016Explorer
I was shocked when I connected a friend's Keurig through a Kill-A-Watt. His unit used a lot of power even when leaning on a shovel. It seems his Keurig pre-heated the water and kept it warm. When I unplugged it, a cup of coffee took longer than four and a half minutes to brew. Sitting unused but plugged in, it consumed 1.17 kWh in four days. I have no idea if all Keurigs do that. His girlfriend bought the machine as a gift. I tried ten different coffee types only to find one was worse than the other. Paul Newman, Dunkin' Donuts, yuck. If a coffee house offered such a grade to its customers, I wouldn't be surprised if a satchel charge were eventually tossed through the front window.
I use a stove (or immersion heating element when n shore power)
A French coffee press
And a genuine Thermos vacuum bottle with pump. This allows for a hot cup of coffee until mid afternoon.
I hand grind my coffee in a Mexican Nixtamal. Unbelievable evenness of the grind, from powder to pebble size.
But I have relegated a Keurig to the status of eating spaghetti out of a can. But that's me. The power wastage is another thing altogether.
