Champion 3500w no power

I have a 6yr old champion 3500w with low hours. Starts on first pull and runs great but no output on either 120v receptacle. I checked the breakers on the front panel and they are all in. Owners manual troubleshooting section mentions a faulty capacitor could be the problem. Anyone know where this capacitor is located or have any other possible ideas.

  • i had that generator
as i recall it has an "electronic voltage regulator" module , located under the ventilated slotted generator head cover,
when facing the front, that is the right side end

the most likely problem, is the field brushes are dirty/stuck and not making contact with the slip rings, also on that end of the generator head, the other possibility is the voltage regulator module is dead

    check the brushes first
  • Called Champion this afternoon and they emailed me a troubleshooting guide and told me to call back with my findings.

they have better tech support than you can find here.

I really hope the OP does call Champion and reports back as I'd like to hear more about their "legendary" service. I can buy a Champion genset just about anywhere around here but mostly in big box stores which sure can't help with parts and service. Our local Costco now finally stocks the Champ 3100 watt inverter genset and even at $950 Cdn + tax it would be tempting BUT NOT if I can't get parts & service just as easily as I can for my Honda genset by simply dropping by my local Honda motorcycle dealer. As successful as Champion has been in recent years I suspect parts & service is still where the rubber meets the road for Champ owners. ;)
  • Yes it's a 120/240v version and made sure toggle is in correct position.

The breakers from what I can tell push out when they trip. None of them were pushed out. Nothing to reset.

  • If you have the version that is 120/240v, verify that the 120/240 toggle switch is not on 240 and not in the center, which means no power.
  • I can't help you with the capacitor.
Did you reset the breakers? I had a similar problem on my Onan generator. The breakers were not kicked. I turned them off and back on, it started working.
Apparently there was some corrosion causing the problem.
It's worth trying. Maybe you will luck out and have a cheap/easy fix.
