Champion 75531i 3100w Inverter/Generator Initial Review

I thought I'd post my intitial review of the Champion 75531i for anyone who is interested in one of these. I researched to death 3000w inverter generators. While I'd love to have a Honda or Yamaha, I just couldn't justify the price for the once or twice a year I would potentially use it at auto races or concert events.

My main concern is if it would power my Outbacks's Coleman Mach 15,000btu AC unit, and if it did would I have any power left over. Luckily, the AC manufacturer has a great website that included its power specs. On paper it looked good but I was still worried about real world use.

I finally decided to take a chance once I saw the unit on sale at Cabelas for $699. The employee that helped me also assured me they had a no questions asked return policy even if I put gas and oil in the unit.

Yesterday I finally got the chance to give it a try. It started on the first pull. After initial break in I put it to the test. The unit easily handled the AC unit. I then began to add lights (I have LEDs), water pump, etc. I switched the fridge over to electric and the generator kept humming. I also turned on the fridge in the outdoor kitchen and the generator never stumbled. I cycled the air on and off with the load and the generator stumbled just a tiny bit when the compressor kicked on but then smoothed right out. I did not try the microwave because it seemed pretty clear that would cause an overload.

Overall I am very impressed. It is reasonably quiet (I didn't have anything else to compare it to). Inside the trailer with the AC running I could not hear the generator. The design with the folding handle and large wheels is well thought out and makes moving and maneuvering the unit very easy. It seems to be very well built and so far I am very happy with my purchase.

Doesn't surprise me. The 2k is not enough to run most airs -at least not without screaming about it.
  • I too have the Champion. I sold my Honda eu2000i after comparing it to my buddies Champion. The sound levels are extremely close. In eco mode, the Honda is only slightly quieter (barely noticeable). In normal mode, the Champion is just slightly quieter (barely noticeable).

As for power, my buddy can run everything he has in his 24ft hybrid (13.5k AC and microwave) without an issue. I have a 2014 Jayco Jayflight 32BHDS and can run everything except the microwave on the Champion (15k AC). I was unable to start my AC with the Honda I had. I live in Arizona, so I can say the Champion is great in 100+ temps.
  • Good report, but I've yet to understand how any generator, dry of fuel in both the tank and carburetor, starts on one pull after putting fuel in it.

Niner, Another way of putting it, is to say the AC compressor may cycle off while other normal loads are present then restart in normal fashion. This would cause a high-head restart, while other hotel loads are present?

Also the converter/converter/perverter/charger was not mentioned in the hotel load scenario.

Not only did the OP not mention the compressor automatically restarting after long run times when head pressure would be much greater but he also didn't mention ambient temperature at all ... BIG difference in load when that compressor is trying to start in 100F temps compared to 70F temps! At the very least I'd be checking to see if that A/C unit is equipped with a hard start cap and if not, add one, just as I've done with the last two A/Cs I've owned, including my current 13.5K BTU Dometic Brisk II which benefitted enormously. FWIW, I've also found that both my EU2000i gensets deal with heavy loads that stretch their capabilities much more easily when running on synth rather than dino oil.

My interest is to gain an appreciation of the capabilities of this particular generator.
  • Turn all those other devices on first, then try to start your 15,000 BTU unit AC. Because AC units and their compressor, which is the big start up draw, cycle on and off, and that's when you need the power, not turning the AC unit on first, and then adding in the rest of the stuff.
  • Great to hear there is a viable alternative to red and blue options, and as you stated it is a no brainer to not pay 2-3 times the price for something that is used just a few times a year. Champion has a lot of happy customers across their product line, if I ever need another generator they will definitely be on my short list.
  • Only used ours a couple of times so far but it has worked great.
