Champion VS Generac Generator

Looking to purchase a generator in the size range of 3000-4000. I have narrowed it down to the Champion and Generac brands. I would love to be able to purchase a Honda but my budget limits me. We will be primarily using it when camping at fairs and races so it will need to be big enough to run our 13.5 btu AC unit. Which would you recommend and what pros and cons did you experience?
  • The Champion 3500/4000 is durable, easy starting and while it's not as quiet as a inverter model, it's quieter than most open frame construction units. I had the basic unit for years and recently upgraded to the remote electric start version.

The Champion 3100i inverter model came out not too long ago and it was recently upgraded to remote electric start. They are quieter and have gotten very good reviews.

The Champion 2000i inverter units are close to as quiet as you are going to get with any brand, pair two of them for AC.

Considering you can pick up a 3500/4000 for under $300 on sale, you just can't beat them.

This unit is NOT an inverter generator and will make more noise because it must run at full speed even with a tiny load. However at full load all gennies are similarly noisy.

There are many here who feel that everyone must spend $2,000.00 for a Honda for even one weekend a year of camping. Those people will chime in and try to convince you that the Champion is a "contractor" grade gennie (it's not), or that the reliability is questionable. The Champion 3500/4000 is more reliable than the Honda, at a fraction of the price.

I reduce the noise on mine by running it in the truck bed on a rubber mat and under a truck bed "cap"
    Good Luck, Mike

I also run mine in the back of the truck on a rubber mat. Don't use it much but it will run my 15k AC.
  • X3 on the Champion. I have had one for a while now and it was all I needed . Runs the 13,500 ac with no problem and easy on fuel. Starts on 1st pull and not that loud. Only draw back is it weighs 100 lbs. All a matter of opinion.
  • Why not just rent a honda or some other quieter brand if you are only going to use it a few times a year? Both you and your neighbors will appreciate the quieter brand. And you will not need to store or maintain it the rest of the time.
  • I don't own a Champion or Generac.

If I buy one, it will be a Champion. I've read a lot of favorable comments about the Champion on the forum and different reviews.
It appears to be a good value for the price.

Yes, I would like a Honda or Yamaha. I can't justify the cost vs. how often it will be used.
