Changing tire on the road?

What's the easiest way to change a tire on the side of the road?
What's the least expensive way to change a tire?

In other words. What kind of jack is recommended? And can it be done manually with a tire iron?
FWIW my trailer is approx. 6,500 lbs.
  • I use a Torin 2 ton 2 stage bottle jack and a torque wrench.
Used it twice in ten years on the road.
Also gets used for tire replacement or bearing maintenance.
  • Interesting note...we had a flat on the outside dual..22.5 tire. When the guy from Coach Net arrived with the new tire, he positioned a metal ramp under the inside dual, had me pull forward onto it and dismounted the bad tire, installed the new one and aired it up without ever removing the rim....Dennis

    Exactly......

Driveway test run......your own 'pit stall'
Best to have at least one time experience where you can work thru any issues vs on side of road with semis/other RVs flying by rocking the rig

I use a 6 ton bottle jack under spring perch with X-chocks installed on opposite side while hooked to truck with parking brake set.

I tried a lug wrench but my lugs are to tight to remove with so I have a 1/2" breaker bar, socket and short piece of pipe to loosen then use the 'X' lug wrench to spin them off/on.
    1/2" torque wrench to set.

  • A couple of years ago I got a flat in a construction zone. I grabbed some of my leveling boards and rolled up onto them ( with the good tire on a tandem). No jack at all.

Is it hard to maneuver up onto? Doesn't look especially wide.
  • Dismount spare if it is mounted on a carrier, break lug nuts loose on flat tire, position 3 ton or better hydraulic jack under spring shackle and elevate flat tire, remove lugs and mount spare tire onto hub, tighten lug nuts as much as possible, lower spare tire to surface, remove jack, tighten lug nuts to appropriate torque.

If you have steel rims, the wheel can be very effectively tightened with a tire iron. If you have aluminum rims, it's best to use a torque wrench.
