Your thoughts about changing tire size please
I am having to replace all 4 tires. After having to borrow a second spare, I noticed it was ST235 80R 16. My original tires are LT 225 75R 16. After looking at my weighed trailer, I see where there is very little fudge factor/safety margin on my old tires. They are rated for 2679#. The difference in size of the other tires doesn't seem like there would be much of a difference, but boy, there really is. The 235's I am probably going to buy are rated for 3527#, a whopping 850# per tire. It's not because one is a truck tire and the other is trailer, and they are both load range E. Please leave truck tire vs. trailer tire out of this discussion.
It looks like I have clearance for it but the 2 potential drawbacks are as follows. I likely won't be able to use my expanding chocks between the tires anymore as there likely won't be enough room for them. The other possible problem is that my driveway and yard present elevation challenges that almost make the camper contact the sides of the truck. These tires are supposedly 1.52" larger in diameter. If I'm thinking right, the trailer will sit half of that amount, .76", higher at the wheels. I am unsure physically if this will cause the front of the camper to tilt down a little or if it will still carry at the same height in the front because it sits on the hitch after all. I'm not sure but I reckon my hitch might could be raised if needed. What do y'all think about these possible drawbacks? It's easy enough to chock it another way, but the possibility of camper/truck contact is another story.
