CHARGE!!! Or not.

Update on pg. 3 here

Update 2 on pg 4 here

No better place on the web for this question... with the likes of a one-time alternator engineer on "board." Mexbungalows... I'm looking in your direction.

2001 Toyota Avalon

Denso alternator

Battery light came on the other day. It didn't remain on for more than a few minutes. However, I knew that may not be the last I saw of it. So I loaded the B&D VEC charger and a 100' extension cord in the trunk the next morning before heading to work.

A couple of weeks went by with no return of the light.

Then... after visiting a property in the town of BFE, just as I was leaving to return to the office, the light came on again... and stayed on. I usually carry a toolbox with a meter. Well I guess I must have borrowed the meter off myself.

A half hour later I make it to my home town... and the radio starts to crackle. I turned it down and it went away. A minute later the radio died. Uh-oh.

So rather than head back to the office, I am just blocks from home. I pull off the highway and after the first stop sign... she will barely accelerate with the pedal to the metal. Electronic fuel injection, let alone ignition.

She gets me home. Meter says 8.5v. Yikes! Amazing she was still running!

So...

Had to borrow the wife's rig 'til I could get a chance to look into it.

The belt has been making a little noise when the A/C is switched on, so I'm hopeful.

I start 'er up. 14.5v and no battery light.

I tighten the belt 'til just after the noise ceases. Sure seems tighter than I used to run older rigs. Perhaps bearing manufacturing has progressed?

Light back on and no charge.

Belt didn't solve it, regardless of how tight. I loosened it to the point of noise again and the alternator began to vibrate.

I reset the belt to a couple of turns after no more noise/vibration.

3 connections (externally regulated?) into the alternator seem clean, but I jostle the connector several times. No help.

Connections on the battery are clean and tight. Nothing is really corroded anywhere.

Power is coming in to the alternator from the battery.

Alternator has about 130K.

So...

what next?
