Bearing. Rear.
Some alts have rear bearings that are hard to replace. Need special tools. The greasing should be good for eighty thousand miles.
Look for a tiny hole in the rear case where that brush retaining pin will stuck out until the case halves get slapped together. Don't forget to yank it or you' ll blow the regulator.
Some NDs need brushes soldered. Use computer dusting air to blow off melted solder. No biggie. This is an easy job BUT you will need a vice to GENTLY clamp the rotor in while you use a 15/16" socket and ratchet to remove the pulley nut to get the rotor out to change the bearing
If you check beforehand and hand spin the rotor and it feels like butter and does not spin after you take your hand off the bearings are fine. The SLIGHTEST noise or if the rotor keeps spinning then it's new bearing time.
