Charging AGM Batteries

Can I charge AGM batteries with a PD9280 Converter/Charger?

  • I wish PD would improve their power factor correction. I can get 127 amps out of the Magnum 3012 hybrid inverter charger on a 15 amp circuit.
  • Yes the 9280 will charge and maintain most AGM very well. No worries.

AGMs will have an "initial charging rate" specified limit in amps, often 27amps per 100AH of capacity (C20). Only Lifeline AGMs can take higher amps safely AFAIK.

So your 80 amper would work on 300AH of battery bank or more. Unless you have Lifeline AGMs

The PD9280 needs a 20 amp (120v) circuit with the 20 amp plug of course.

You need to keep hitting the Charge Wizard to keep it at 14.4v till the AGMs are truly full so they are not left undercharged, sulphating. You hold them at 14.4v till amps taper to 0.5a/100AH or 1.5 amps with the 300AH bank.

That means you need an ammeter to observe when the amps get to that amount. I use my Trimetric monitor as the ammeter for that job.
