Cheap crummy entry door lock. Any good ones?

I bought my current rig last May. The keys were missing and the guy gave me some copy of a copy of a copy that he said would work.

Well, after fighting with the thing to get it to work, I just wandered down to an RV parts store and bought a whole new door lock / deadbolt assembly.

Ever since day 1 the thing has been difficult to operate and I have to fiddle fart with key to get it open. And then the key sticks. Hard to get in hard to take out. Yes I oiled it.

I got to get the TT from storage last Sunday and I managed to get the deadbolt open but no way the latch lock would give. Grrrr. Gal at my storage place was standing beside me. Let me try she says. I step back and say have at it! She finally managed to get it open.

With the door open I lock it and try again. The whole lock cylinder fell out of the door.

What a piece of junk! Less than a year old and it is garbage.
Brand name on the inside of the door lock says FIC. Only marking on it aside from Lock Unlock!

So, question is:
Are there any decent manufacturers of door lock assemblies?
Or are they all the same pile of junk?

I need to get another new one but want something that actually works and I don't have to stand there fighting with the key.

I actually have to replace all my outside locks. They are all hard to operate.
  • Thanks for the updated info everyone. I will pursue this further in a few days when I am between projects and can take a few hours to take care of it.

Hello Bobs your Uncle... If you are still in Calgary, you could take your unit to Bucars RV just north of Calgary (they are located just west of Cross Iron Mills Mall). They are good folks and will likely take care of you. If there is a recall, I would be very surprised if they wouldn't repair it and take care of the "paperwork" for you. They are good folks and will try to do what they can to take care of you.

Yes I'm still in Calgary. It's blinkin cold here right now. I'm set up at a warehouse shop in the SW and my current project is in Airdrie.

So to get there I get on the Stoney and head up Deerfoot, right past Cross Iron.

I'll be going by in about an hour so I'll look for the place on my way by.

    Thanks for the hint.

Here's a link to the recall letter they sent out, listing the specific locks that are covered. Toward the bottom is an 800 number to call for instructions on how to return your lock and receive a replacement.

    Link.

I checked the recall letter and the code on my key does not match any of the ones on the list.
However, my lock does have the symptoms described in the letter.

I'll email them to find out if I am covered by the recall.
  • I just found this info and discovered two lock sets on the same trailer, one original and one replacement, that are a part of the recall. I completed the form and requested that I be sent 4 matching cores. I hate having one key for each door, a third for the luggage bays and a fourth for a matching set of padlocks...

I have already sent this info to a co-worker and to my in-laws. Hopefully everybody who should have this info will read it in time.

    Hi there in Edmonchuk!
I'm living in my TT in Calgary as I work here away from home. Home is that sewerhole Surrey. I like Calgary better. ahem, anyways -

I sent in the request for replacement locks a couple weeks ago.
Not sure how long it takes to process.
Can't imagine what they have to go through to replace all these defective locks. Wow, a lot of time effort and money for them. But kudos to them for addressing it.
  • Well, two months passed and I was as patient as I could be. I am heading into camping season and would like to finish all the projects before the first outing. I had to email the manufacturer for an update. I got a quick reply that a replacement was leaving the next day. I am flying out for a 10 day vacation, hopefully there will be a box on the doorstep when I return.
