Cleaning Vortex fan screen

My Vortex fan screen is ready for a bath, and I'm not sure on the best way to clean it.

Its a very fine steel mesh, so any sort of liquid cleaner will cause it to rust... any oil based cleaner might work, but will leave residue on the mesh and cause it to attract more dust?

I tried brushing it, but the dust trapped in the mesh just moves around but not out. Vacuum didn't do much either.

Any other ideas?

  • Maybe it's stainless, I'll check it with a magnet. Either way, I'll try 2old's suggestion of a hot water soak and then maybe some compressor time to dry it out.

    thanks all!
  • I don't know about Vortex but I clean the screen on my Fantastic Vent fan regularly with soap and water. No rust so far, probably stainless steel. Yours is probably stainless or else coated, if not it would rust from moisture in the air.
  • Mine was getting pretty bad after several years use. Used high-pressure air, low-pressure air, vacuum, tried brushes and all sorts of cleaning tools. no way! So, just gave up and got my screwdriver(phillips). Fan case opens on seam, four recessed screws on the back(be careful and don't drop). Made sure it was unplugged, then dusted it well, cleaned each blade with cloth and spray, used brush, wipes and air to clean entire case, screens, and everything I could get to. Carefully put it back together, and tested! Runs better, much less noise, and more air. Clean blades are really important. Make sure they are all good and clean, any dirty spots will make it out-of-balance.
  • On my model I use the compressed air I clean the desk top computer with - ain't perfect but it helps. I also use Q tips soaked in rubbing alcohol for some of the work. I suppose you could just take it outside and use the hose - that's what I do with my box fans - you just have to make sure they are bone dry before you turn them back on.
