IIUC, it was a huge issue, for exactly the reason you say! Ships' clocks had to be incredibly accurate, and designing one that would be was a matter of national security. I saw a PBS show on this once... and I think there is a book, Longitude.
May not be an issue for Mex or most RVers, though :). - NaioExplorer II

I'm sure there are many kids who can't tell time with a 'real' clock.
I work with 20-somethings. Many of them can't.SaltiDawg wrote:

Nope. Now if you say quarter OR 17, they say, 'What? Oh... is that 7:43?' - SaltiDawgExplorerIn the day if you were asked what time it was you might have answered, "Quarter of eight."

Same with the transition from Slide Rule to Calculator. In the day, two ten ohm resistors in parallel were 5 ohms. Now the student says it is 5.000 ohms - the +/- 10% applies to both. lol - Old-BiscuitExplorer IIII prefer a 24 hr. analog clock....if I actually cared what time it is/was.

"NAWWWWWW!"
Show up ten minutes late for a cardiologist's appointment and they take it in stride
"Oh sir, we wouldn't DREAM of saying you are late and rescheduling your appointment for next September!"
"We close at four-thirty on the dot!"
Hmmmm, seems like the cake doesn't like 45 minutes as much as 35 minutes. Next time it will be two thousand degrees for six minutes - westendExplorerI have an older GE table clock on the nightstand. It makes zero noise and keeps excellent time. Another benefit is that it has no alarm, a superfluous accessory for a retired guy.
FWIW, I've used those ship's clocks, mainly for shooting location with a sextant. Accuracy was kept by tuning the radio in the wheelhouse to the Denver broadcast of universal time with a count down to the hour and second, adjusting the clock accordingly. A couple of seconds of inaccuracy would put your location 100 miles off, East or West. I have no clue how they did it before radio, accuracy was probably not an issue. - GMandJMExplorer

My young GS wanted a clock for his room. I bought him one with hands. He wanted digital but, he got over it.

- RayJaycoExplorerI hope that everyone remembered to add the leap second at the end of June... :-D
I haven't wore a wrist watch in years as it bothers the scar of an injury from years ago. If I did, I would still prefer analog though...
I use my cellphone for time typically. I do have a digital alarm clock on my nightstand, however I can't remember the last time I set it! It does have pretty blue numbers that tell me what time it is when I get up to use the bathroom! Lots of digital clocks in kitchen- coffee pot, microwave, stove, etc... Family room has the cable box...
Time is merely a matter of perspective, hold a hot potato for a second and it seems like an hour, hold a hot lady for an hour and it seems like a second!
I hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July!
