Coleman A/C Motor Serviceable?

UPDATE - And hopefully final. Or at least as final as things get on an RV. I had cleaned up the motor and the coils between trips. Then we started fridge and A/C while we packed for the current trip.
Motor stuck again. It seemed to have lost shaft end play, so I cleaned it up and removed a shim washer from the shaft.
Motor stucck again. We left on our current trip, but ordered the motor referenced above from Amazon, to be delivered to a local friend's home. Got it yesterday afternoon. Motor stuck again last evening, freed with WD-40, swapped it out this morning. It seems, or at least we hope, to be a little quieter.
The problem must be related to contamination of the sleeve bearing material. Every time I had it apart, the oil on the shaft at the inner end of one of the bushings was black. I found the bushings to be some kind of iron/steel, but they still have to be porous in some way to hold oil. I've heard of a material called "sintered iron" which I understand to be light weight so maybe that's it.
If I run into a bearing supply house, I'll probably get a couple bearings and felts and rework the motor as a spare. It didn't cost us a trip, and we didn't get stuck sitting in summer heat with no A/C.
I can usually fix what I take on, and don't buy all that many parts to do it. That includes a lot of various kinds of motors. But, as the Knights of Old knew:

I would tend to agree with this but I do have to give J-D a A++++ for creative repair efforts :B

A hole lot of work just to hold off on replacing the motor. You must have alot of time on your hands. One ought to replace it and be done with it before it fails you when you really need it. Climbing up and down these roof comes with risk and it could really bit you for not wanting to replace what you should from the begining.

Well, it was serviceable. Held together with long through-bolts (actually about #8 machine screws). I cleaned the rust off the outdoor (condenser fan) shaft and motor came apart easily. Actually, it never showed what might have been holding it back. I crocus clothed the bearing surfaces on the shaft and inside the steel sleeve bearings. Noticed the "wicking" around the bearings that's there to soak up oil and keep it available to the bearings was crumbling. Drilled and punched the rivets out, made new wicking from cotton cloth, reassembled with screws, nuts, lock washers. Noticed now that the oil didn't just pass through the wicking and drip out. Ran it several hours several days strapped to a box, with the blower wheel on it to load it, and it ran cool and free. Reinstalled today. I also did the A/C Tuneup by Chris Bryant which I'll open as another thread. Did a test run this morning. Cool, smooth, and quiet. Hopefully for a long time. I hedged my bet by adding an Oil Hole that I can use to keep the wicking wet with oil.

You might get away with tearing the motor apart, cleaning the shafts and bearings and adding some fresh oil, but I doubt it will last long.

I tried that on a Miller mobile home gas furnace fan motor, the result was at the least opportune time (like 3 A.M) the fan motor would stop running.

The problem is the bronze bearings, once they grab any dirt they hold on to it no matter how much you soak them or clean them. They just gunk up the fresh oil.

Additionally you need to be aware of any shims, often on these motors there will be shims between the bearing and rotor. Often these are nothing more than plastic and wear down, check the shaft for in/out play. There should be no or very little play.

Buy a new one and be done with it.

UPDATE! We got home from camping. Motor wouldn't run but about 8 hours before I'd have to go spray the motor shaft with WD-40 and add a couple drops of Turbine Oil. Today, I launched my repair campaign. Well, after I got a new compressor capacitor for the home A/C and got it cooling a very hot house...
The Motor is OUT but not Apart. It IS held in place with nuts, then another set of nuts takes the through-bolts out of the motor. There's no need to take the evaporator cover off, nor the interior grille down. What DOES have to happen was the Condenser Fan has to come off. It's plastic so even though there was rust on the shaft I could put a 9/16" open end wrench over the shaft, against the fan hub, and tap the fan off with a hammer against the wrench. With that done, it's possible to move the rest of the assembly to where the indoor blower cage will come out of the evaporator cover. Indoor blower came right off. Then disconnect wiring to remove the motor. So that's where that part of the project stands.
I also did Chris Bryant's A/C Cleanup/Tuneup on the two coils and washed both the fan and the blower cage. Blower was loaded with black gunk! I was able to position a cookie sheet to deflect water from going down into the coach. Sprayed the evaporator coil with Awesome and sprayed it clean with a garden hose. More dirt and gunk. Did same with the condenser coil. That's easier since there's no entry to the coach.
SOOO... Motor case pends. It squeaked as it came to a stop this morning before I started on the project. Right now it rolls over like a new motor. We'll see.

I jotted that number down as E802 the other night when this crisis began. I'll take another look up there directly.
Whatever's going on up there is really odd. I had it running free this morning by going up there and lubing it with Turbine Oil (the Zoom Spout stuff for appliances). Tonight it won't start again. I flipped the indoor blower over as wife turne it on, and it started, with a squeak. I believe that the problem is somehow on the Inner (armature) end of the Outdoor Fan end of the shaft. I can get it spinning like a new motor. 12 hours later it's squeaky stuck.
Four more lubes and I'll have it home. Then it comes apart.
Meanwhile, looking at it in the sunlight this morning, I could see nuts on the thru-motor fasteners. That tells me I won't have to grind rivets then find long screws to hold it together.
I'll check the FASCO number again and see what I can find online at FASCO's site then Amazon. More soon. THANKS!!!

See if you can read the part numbers on the motor itself--it should be a FASCO motor, and there should be a 5-digit number (e.g. E0904). Then look it up to see what the current part number is. I was able to replace mine about a year and a half ago with this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005G20RCI/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 -- identical to the motor it replaced, but about half the price of what I found using the Coleman part number.

Yessir, I did, and it matches what I learned when I shopped for Ceiling Fans a few years ago. Asked about Ball Bearings and was told the fans used Sleeve Bearings because BB's were noisy. The may start out quiet, but they get louder with age. A new Alternator is quiet when you spin it over. One that has some miles on it sounds like a roller skate wheel. I think I'll either clean or replace the sleeve bearings. They look like "spherical" bearings that are meant to align themselves to the shaft.
The writeup doesn't talk about my question about riveted motor, and I notice a new nut in a photo, holding the motor together. He refers to replacing the rivets in the bearing retainers with screws and nuts, but not the motor assembly rivets/screws. And they aren't on his materials list. I'm not too worried about that. If they ARE rivets, I can only hope to find screws long enough.
More on that as I pursue that little overhaul. Those sleeve bearings have run since 2002, probably with no maintenance, and they still aren't loose.
