Computer power while boondocking?

I've got 2 6-volt house batteries in my Class A gasser. There is no factory installed inverter. I want to SAFELY run 2 laptops and a mobile hotspot while boondocking. What are my options? What would you recommend and why? Thanks.....

  • The simple way to run a laptop and hot spot is a Universal 12 volt power supply DC to DC converter.
Use the USB port on the power supply for the hot spot. Or use the USB port on the LT to power the hot spot.
This will not work if you have a Dell or HP laptop. They use a propitiatory power supply, with 3rd lead.

A $29 inverter would be MSW. That will work on some devices but you are taking a risk.

It seemed to work fine on my computer ... until it killed it two weeks later. Thinking the charger was ok (just not the computer) I used the same charger ON SHORE POWER with a same-model computer. Killed that one, too.

OP, get PSW, or a 12v charger for your model computer.
  • I bought a 300W inverter from Love's Travel Plaza for $29 on sale & with rebate. Wired in a 12V plug by bed and use a portable solar unit. Use it to power CPAP machine all night plus charging iPad, Nook & MiFi. Works perfectly!
  • Hi,

A small 300 watt pure sine wave inverter will be fine. But if you plan on being out for a while you will also need a way to recharge the battery bank.

I chose to go solar for that part of boondocking.

  • Honda generators provide clean power. DH is a developer and that's what we used before we installed our solar system. With solar, we don't have to get the generator out.
  • Any good 300~400 watt inverter will be more than enough power,
