You are not to bond the sub panel because it will put some of the neutral load onto the ground, whether it is a wire, earth or raceway.

Is you barn's feed in steel conduit or how does it get there? Yes, if it is in steel or other metallic conduit that is your ground back to the service point.
You do not have to bring the system up to current code. Your installation should be grandfathered in if were to be inspected.
