you would need to set the laptop NIC to something other then "192.168.1.253"
I find this less than useless.
How about the reduction of IP address conflicts?????????????
Two devices on the same subnet with the very same IP address do not play well

Without additional information - Too many variables
We need the Model # of the controller
Only one of the MS controller families has a direct RJ-45 Ethernet connection
That unit is the MS MPPT 60 series
You will need to connect via the serial port first
Have you used the MSView application?
Remember there two separate methods of connecting to the devices and only one of the connection types can be used at a time
1 - Configuration wizard
2 - Device connection
3- A third if you have the Ethernet enabled device is it's integrated web server - simply type the IP address in the browser's URL window
What version firmware is in the controller?
Several changes have happened over the last several years
What has been done to date to try and get it connected
Some info on your PC
Does it have a serial port?
Do you have a USB to serial adapter?
What's your PC's IP address?
Do you have a null modem rs232 9pin cable?
If not STRONGLY suggest you get one and "connect" with it FIRST
Sorry as I have stated many times the connection to MS devices is really VERY simple.
It's detailed with examples in several of the MS publications
I can remotely log into my MPPT 60 from anywhere on my home network
But not via the Web since I do not have a VLAN configured for that device or a valid Internet IP address for the device.
What are your plans?
Home network connection
Internet access
One is a subset of the other which requires much more configuration
