Converter Fans Not Running

Hey All,

Brand new to the forums. Was looking for some information about my converter. I have a 2004 Starcraft Antigua. Last time we were out camping in it I noticed that the lights would get bright then dim. This cycle continued over and over again. Went to bed and was awoke in the middle of the night by the sound of an electrical short. Investigated and couldn't find any fire thank goodness because the kids were with me and their beds are near the converter.

Was checking things out the next morning and realized that the fans in the converter were not running. They almost always ran when you turned enough lights on in the camper. Everything else seemed to be working fine. When plugged into shore line all the lights work and the battery even gets charged. After the fans stopped working the lights no longer cycle bright to dim. The only problem seemed to be the fans not running.

I took the converter cover off and removed one of the two fans. It is twelve volt and worked fine when I hooked it up to a twelve volt battery. I did some reading online and discovered that there is supposed to be a temperature sensor that tells the fans to come on and off based on the temperature inside the converter? Any idea how I would test/identify this piece? I certainly don't want to burn up my converter by running it without the fans.

Thanks for any advice you can offer me.

Kevin

  • Thanks all. I didn't have a chance to pick up any distilled water to add to the battery today. Will grab some tomorrow and charge the battery to see what happens.

I have to admit that the more I think about it the more I think something else may be wrong because of the shorting sound I heard just before the fans stopped working.

I'll let you know what happens.

  • That's what took out a converter I had in another TT. The fan wore out, seized and then the the converter overheated and died.

I agree the dim/bright/dim /bright may be a circuit breaker cycling

The fans on my converter were not running much last night either (47 degrees out and it's "out" (in the basement).

On the other hand last August when temps hit 3 digits they ran constantly.
  • Jerry,

Thanks. I wondered about that too. I pulled the battery out and it was low on acid so I was going to add some distilled water. I have to pick some up at the store though. Will do that and charge it to see what happens.

    Thanks for your reply.
