cooked my wfco ?

got 50amp service tonight
decided to use electric heat
plug in two heaters 200w and 900w
oops plugged them into the inverter outlets
NO.. did not trip the inverter or hurt it
but the wfco was doing heavy lifting, powering the inverter plus the lights, etc.
it shut down, no output, only the orange battery led is on
no output, no fans, no green power input led

now using the 40amp vector to charge the batteries back up
i'll open the wfco tomorrow if it don't rain
and look for an internal fuse on the 120v side
but i just might be shopping for a new converter

  • There is a "120" volt fuse in most converters on the circuit board right where the 120v cord comes in.

If it quit from "overload" it might just need a reset. Tech support might help with that info when the manual doesn't.

If it is the in-rush thermistor that fried, it can be replaced. I changed mine out on the similar PowerMax 100 amper. You can tell if it that by fine cracks showing on the big disk and when you poke it pieces crumble off. PowerMax has since changed the circuit board and thermistor on their production models (mine is a prototype I got a few years ago now)

If you can't get the 68100 going, with your battery type and big bank you might be a good candidate for the PowerMax 120amp adjustable voltage model.

It would do that job and also give you voltage options for exactly meeting your battery specifications, including being able to fine tune that spec voltage for temperature ( a voltage vs temp table is available--Mark was it? posted one a while back here that I printed and find very handy.)

Found it. Half way down here

  • Heh heh heh...

A matter of sorting out which one is least offensive to the sensibilities. Not chucking over your inverter failure Mr Wizard merely at the near psychosis needed to settle on which shortcomings are worth what amount of money. It's a cruel world out there...chin up.

Not an issue for frequent pedestal hookups but wuuwee for heavy boondockers

Well when a person (like me) is dealing with The Harbor Freight Salvage of converters I expect my WhiffCo to blow snot at any moment. I have substitutes waiting in the wings.

Good fortune on your quest senor. Plenty of folks here standing by with the latest in low prices. Myself I would tend to counterweight the scale heavily with the percentage of time I spend boondocking. How miserable was life with the WhiffCo - and all that. None of them can properly recharge a battery bank using a generator so that would tighten my wallet as would any of them to equalize a battery according to Hoyle. Amazing! A Cruising Equipment Co amp hour meter / alternator combo of 1989 could do any size bank a correct equalization and 27 years later here we are a product of the Great Leap Backward. Of course, for boondocking. PPP's do not have such issues.
  • Let me guess,.....W/ a "W" in the name brand, you aren't real surprised ! :)
  • So what will you choose as a replacement? Iota only goes up to 90 amps. Boondocker series?
  • i did a quick check, they looked oK

i DO HAVE, the Orange/Amber Battery connection indicator LED 'on'
but NO output no GREEN power indicator, meaning the converter is connected to battery power, if the fuse were blown, that would not light up

manual says if power is available and Amber led is on, but there is no output
    converter is malfunctioning, contact support
this is the 68100 model, deck mount 100amps

if i have to replace it, i'll probably get something different
and i will very likely have to replace it
  • Hi Mr Wizard,

Check the reverse polarity fuses. That is what happened to my PD when I tried to do double conversion in the spring. (At least I have the excuse that I meant to be loading up the converter).
