I forget the exact instructions, but you had to turn the lock a certain way and pull the cylinder out. Perhaps you did this by accident? I'd try putting the cylinder back in, turning the key, and see if it comes out again. As posted, the whole mechanism isn't really that pricy anyway.
that is my guess also. borrow a master key to replace it properly.
