Dedicated 20AMP outlet from Generator

I have a Parallax Power system for my trailer. I want to set up a 20 AMP outlet for me to plug in an air compressor. Do you guys see any problems tying into the 120V out of the gen and running another outlet off the generator? I'm sick of my power system not pushing enough amps. The A/C has 30 amp service, the converter has 20 amp but the rest of the outlets are 15 amp. My question is if there would be any issues making a generator specific outlet, isolated from the entire power system. Of course I would make a sub box and but a breaker on it.

Heck, you coudl (if you have the space) drop an additional breaker in your main breaker box.. This would accept either shore or Genny power,, but you (in theory) know enough to kill the A/C and Microwave before compressing air.

    yet another suggestion.

I ran TWO lines to a box I installed (Weather proof utility box) it has an outlet and a plug, the plug feeds the Rear A/C on my 50 amp rig, the outlet is fed by the 20 amp breaker that used to feed the Rear A/C, Plug the plug into the outlet, all is normal, Unplug and I have power for the air compressor, OR an alternate way to feed the rear A/C (off the park's 20 amp outlet). works great.
  • Air compressor is outside so I assume you want a 20 amp exterior outlet that could be difficult using the existing panel.

And yes just get a new transfer switch while you are updating the electric.

Good idea but there isn't enough room on the board. Its all used up i think. I'll have to take another look. But the other problem is that I want to avoid the Auto Transfer Switch because sometimes it doesn't kick over to the gen and i have to restart the genny 3 or 10 times. Hard wiring to the gen, and knowing i will have power 100% of the time will settle my nerves when i need to air up the truck to get home...

First order of business is to fix the transfer switch. Then go back to the power center and see if there is room to install a 20 amp breaker as was suggested earlier.
  • The 2 genny circuits are separate. The 30A powers the breaker box and the 20A is for the second AC. I ran the wires from the junction box to a 4 square in my back compartment and put in a double duplex labeled 20A & 30A. The 20A is unused by my MH as I had removed the BR AC so that duplex is a full 20A whenever the genny is running.

  • Why isolate the new outlet from everything? You've already got a breaker panel good for 30 amps, just put a 20 amp breaker in the power center and hook the new outlet to that.
  • No problem at all. Small breaker box to split out power would work perfect.
Use #12 wire for 20a branch circuit.
  • As long as you don't exceed the genny's rating and it was totally separate you should be fine.
