deionized water versus distilled water

I just checked the conductivity (micromhos) of all the water around my house. I've used the storefront water machine stuff in my bipap for years w/o any scaling and it still measures 30. Sparklett drinking water is 40. I have an old bottle of store bought distilled and it's 17. The store front machines claim it's distilled and RO'd but I never believed it. The machines would have to be several times larger to put out the gallons they do. My lousy salty raw water at the house, from nearby wells is 3700. My softened tap water is 4000. I use water from a simple two-tank non-recirculating DI system at work to keep my water test equipment rinsed out and it won't move the needle on the conductivity meter and that's really only entry level DI.
One time distilled water is not pure. WFI water (water for injectibles) is 8 times distilled. Each time strips off more organics.
Completely DI'd water is hard to keep DI'd. It will instantly start reionizing even from air exposure. My old bottle of distilled water was probably less than 17 when it was new. I use the store bought distilled water in my batteries and radiators. I've never seen DI bottled water in stores but I'll start looking. Craig

Couldn't tell you. But where we are in Canada it's 1.37. I would say somebody is making a tidy profit. More power to them. I see it everywhere from about 1.09 to 2.49 per 4 litres. I haven't seen the deionized stuff but then again I haven't been looking.

On edit. Angela says we paid 1.67 for four litres of demineralized water at Walmart last week on the way to Van. The distilled was the same price on the shelf beside it. So yah, it appears walmart is pricier than some of the others out there.

CPAP with humidifier. The several contact connection between the blower and the humidifier has digital information. The contacts get dirty. Use DEOXIT D100 to clean the contacts. End of problem.

Having lived on the Island for 20 years, everything is more expensive there because of the shipping cost. But at least you don't have to pay Vancouver's extreme housing prices...

Everything, and I mean everything in the US is waay cheaper. We buy everything we can on the internet and get it shipped to a US mailbox and drive across the border to get it and have saved thousands by now. We've only had to pay taxes and duty once at the border. Need tires? Drive to Oregon and get them for 1/2 of the lowest price in BC plus there's no tax in Or.

Bottled drinking water is such a rip. We have a local No-Frills grocery store that is currently selling a case of bottled water for $1 but a 4 case/day limit. DW is now stocking up as much as she can get.

I've only been able to find distilled water in 1 gallon jugs. If you need a small bottle of it to top up your batteries, it's not available. Maybe I didn't look in the right store? Now we have an almost full, stupid big jug of the stuff sitting on a shelf which will probably last until the day I am gone.

IIRC my walmart has drinking water, distilled water, and I believe deionized water. I have never read the label on the drinking water to know if it is distilled or not. since it all sells for the same money, just get the distilled jug.

Same reason why almost everything is more expensive in Canada. Taxes. Water itself is cheap.

Mexico have local products cheaper than the US, because their labor is a lot cheaper. But they are paying 30-40% extra for all the civilization gimmicks like tools, hardware etc, because it's imported from the US. Which still makes possible to have local products cheaper than in the US, because their labor is 2-3 times cheaper. When I see +$40 price in a Mexican hotel, I drive faster and several hours more, to make a trip with fewer hotel nights, because $40 is a rip-off, considering that hotel personnel makes $40 A WEEK. I'm not eager to make those rich richer yet.

Just be aware that distilled drinking water bought in stores actually HAS minerals PUT BACK into the water for taste purposes (pure distilled water tends to not "taste" very good). Read the water bottle, typically it will state something about minerals added for taste.

So using distilled drinking water is basically no better for your batteries than using tap water (unless you are like me and have a water well which is very high in iron and minerals)...

With that said, I have in a pinch used tap water from my well with no ill effects although I have only done that a couple of times over the last eight years..

One of the best sources for battery water comes from a dehumidifier IF you keep the coils and bucket clean. No minerals in dehumidifier water, water comes from condensing the moisture from the air..
