Dexter Axle Hub removal

This is my first time trying to do this. I was going through each hub and greasing each hub with the e-z grease fittings and I thought I would check the brake pads for wear. I used a rubber mallet and tried to get the red hub off but none of them would budge. The wheels have electric breaks and you can freely spin the wheels. I was hesitant to use a bigger hammer even though that usually works.

  • If you are using the E Z lube grease zert there is a 99% chance you have already got grease on the brake shoes. Once you do the shoes need replacing. Dexter had already put too much grease in the hubs and on my trailer grease had gotten past the seals on three of the wheels and on the shoes on one. Dexter guarantees their brakes for two years and since mine was only a year old, and I had never greased them, Dexter replaced all four of my brakes.
  • That's what I am not doing. I am only taking of the rubber dust seal on the end of the grease cover to grease the hubs. I did not take the entire cover off so I didn't see the nut and cotter pin. Still have 4 wheels to go so I will give that a shot. Thanks a lot!
  • As stated above, I don't know what you mean by the "red hub". All you have to do is remove the grease cover, the cotter pin and the nut. You may, or may not have to back off the brake adjustment. Most of the time I am able to get them off without having to do this. You should always replace the grease seal once you remove the hub.
  • The red hub? Not sure what that is but you have to remove the big nut and often times you have to back off the brake adjusters before it will slide off over the shoes.
Make sure you clean any grease off the pads and drum with brake cleaner.
