Dicor on top of "factory grey sealant"

Went topside to check and calk as needed, and noticed last year's Dicor sealant over the top of the factory "grey colored" sealant around all openings lifted off with little to no effort.

Last year I cleaned the grey sealant with rubbing alcohol, wiped clean and dry, and applied Dicor over the small cracks, thinking "job well done".

So, either Dicor is not compatible with the grey sealant, or my procedure was wrong.

Thoughts?

Edit - mods, I wasn't sure the best or most appropriate section for this ... maybe General RVing?
  • Did you take the time to watch Dicor's How To Video? Denatured alcohol is typically the last step before applying self-leveling lap sealant. Dicor does come in white and gray and the color doesn't affect the application. I've used both on our prior TT and had no problems.
  • Most likely the sealants are not compatible. If the old stuff is silicone, nothing will stick to it.

Nope, but I did read the instructions, and did install per the video that I just now reviewed. I just don't know what the factory grey sealant is ... and I do know last year's Dicor self-leveling sealant lifted off easily last weekend. ???

I'm pretty sure the old sealant is not silicone, at least I sure hope not. It's whatever Keystone put on during original manufacturing.

How to I positively identify the old sealant?
  • The old sealant is probably Dicor, it tends to get a grayish color to it over time.
As long as the old Dicor is solid, you can go over it.

The problem might have been you should have allowed it to dry overnight prior to applying the second coat. Might have built a thin layer of nasty between the two Dicor's that let loose of the top coat.
