Diesel Engine

We bought a new Motor Home with a Diesel engine in it. The question I have, we are at a park for the winter and I was wondering if I can run the engine for 15 minutes while parked, with the 50 amp power to it, slide outs out, and levelers down on it?

Hi Ed, Let that diesel engine sleep, they do not like to be woke up for no reason.........If you wake her up she is expecting to go to work. Fuel tank full! Enjoy where you are at and don't worry about starting the engine till you are ready to move.

You can run it that long, and it doesn't matter if you're plugged into shore power as your transfer switch will disconnect and make the engine's alternator primary.

Sorry but that's incorrect information. The transfer switch would only change over if the generator was started. The chassis alternator has nothing to do with the 120V AC system.
  • Unless you are going to drive it and get it up to normally operating temperatures, I'd just let it sit. Diesel's are pretty forgiving if you are just sitting for 2-3 months I'd not worry about it. Might idle rough for a minute when you do start it but it'll settle right out. Make sure your fuel tank is full or add something to absorb any tank condensation and your good to go.
  • Why would you want to do that? You can run it that long, and it doesn't matter if you're plugged into shore power as your transfer switch will disconnect and make the engine's alternator primary. Depending upon the make/model, the slides and levelers may present a problem.

    Again, why?
