different tank level sensor problem

While working under my trailer I noticed some of the insulation looked like it had housed mice. When I removed it I found some of the wires to the fresh water tank level sensors had been chewed off. I am assuming that the red plastic that the wires go into is some kind of resistor pack. If that is what it is what is it called and where do I get one?

  • I've got it on order. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
  • That particular one is apparently a KIB product code AR-650924; googling can find a few online sellers that carry it (or at least web sites of people purporting to sell it).
  • Drew. That is what I am looking for. Three of the four wires are chewed to some extent. I haven't been able to find new ring terminals of the right size yet. I figured that if I can get a replacement it would be easier than repairing.
  • Typically I think they are just a set of resistors in series, tapped for the various wires going to the tank. The liquid in the tank shorts out (for a rather high-resistance sense of "short") one or more of the resistors, which drives the monitor lights.

If the actual blob is intact, just reconnecting the wires would be sufficient and safe. These very much current-limited circuits. I assume you can still tell which wires go to which tank level probes.

For those who are having trouble visualizing these things, this is the sort of thing that they're talking about:
  • The red plastic sounds like the material that is part of the final eye shaped connection to the screw that connects to the in tank sensor. If I'm correct it will only need to be either patched up or the actual conection replaced. I'd vote to patch it up as a replacement may result in more headaches. The actual sensor that is in the tank and is at the end of the connection that you are seeing chewed up wires, is not affected by the repair so long as the sensors still reflect tank levels when observing their status on your monitor. Nothing to worry about long term. Repair it and fix the insulation. That sensor is simply a none electric operation as it is acting as a ground switch that illuminates the moniter level light at the panel. Does it look like THIS
  • Pictures?
More likely simple shrink tubing over a solder connection, or a butt splice.
