Directv receiver question

I have a H25 directv receiver at home which is SWM. My Winegard dish in the MH indicates that in order to use the H25 SWM receiver, I need to hookup a SWM8 and power inserter.
Apparently a H24 receiver will work with the Winegard dish without going thru the SWM8 and power inserter. I could pick one up on ebay or craigslist, but was wondering if I can swap my access card to get the h24 operational, I really don't want to pay for an additional subscription for something that will only be used occasionally..... I really am not familiar with all the directv implications. Thanks !

  • I have used a H24 receiver for several years. In the summer house I set it to a Slimline 3 SWM. In the motor home I set it to Slimline 5 - Multiswitch.
I have a Winegard SK3005 Traveler dish in the motor home.
    It works fine.

Thanks again... the Winegard dish is HD capable, just doesn't support SWM without the additional hardware. Seems like an H24 would work. I contacted Directv and they responded that they would ship me whatever they had, I had no choice of model so that's a waste of time Amazon,Ebay and others have the H24's so that's probably the route I'll go
  • Be careful if you choose to buy a receiver on Craigs List or eBay. Many receivers are actually leased not owned and you could end with a receiver that DTV won't activate.
  • If the Winegard will do HD, great. If not, don't need HD receiver.

Thanks for the input.... is there any downside to getting an H24 to replace the H25 ? Seems a bit simpler than going with the SWM8 and inserter ...
  • Changing your Winegard to use SWM isn't all that difficult nor expensive. Power inserters are <$20 online and the SWM8 switch isn't all that much more. All you have to do is connect all 4 outputs of the Winegard to the appropriate ports on the SWM8 and then connect the SWM8 through the inserter to the receiver with one piece of RG6.
  • Sorry, but you need to either upgrade to SWM technology in your RV or go buy a H/HR24 or lower receiver.
  • Access cards are "married" to their receiver, and can't be successfully moved to another.
