Disabling the converter charger when using the inverter

Apologies if this has been answered but a search didn't help.

If I install a disconnect switch in the positive lead from the converter to the batteries, will this create a problem?

This would be only for the times when the shore power cable is connected to the 2kw inverter to avoid having the batteries trying to also be charged by the converter. Its a 55 amp WFCO converter that I upgraded to the WFCO 9800 series converter with a 3 stage charger. The inverter also has a 3 stage charger which I use to charge the batteries with the generator when dry camping so I wouldn't be losing the ability to charge the batteries. At full hook-up sites, I'd close the switch to allow the converter to charge the batteries and the inverter would just be idle.

It seems like it would work but just wanted to check in advance.

Thanks,

Mike
  • You certainly don't want the inverter trying to power the converter.
  • The converter to battery pos wire might already have the rig's "battery disconnect switch" on it somewhere.

When that is opened, the converter cannot charge the battery bank, but then neither can the battery bank run the rig's 12v systems via the DC fuse panel. When on inverter for 120, you are still on battery off-grid. The inverter is just another 12v load on the battery bank.

You must disable the converter by disconnecting its 120v supply (various methods for that) AFAIK the charger in the inverter/charger will not "enable" when on inverter.
  • It would sorta work in that the converter would not charge the battery. However the converter would still power the 12v items in the RV. Far better IMO to put the 9800 on a separate 120v breaker and use the breaker as a switch when using the inverter.
  • With that setup I'd disconnect the converter permanently. But not by cutting a wire to the batteries, cut the 120v feed line. Otherwise the converter is being powered when your inverter is on.
