Dishanywhere

I'm a Dish customer and have been forever. According to my local RV repair shop the satellite dish setup on the roof of the toyhauler I bought a few months back is dead. Instead of paying for a new satellite dish and have it installed plus a new receiver, my plan is to replace the TV that came with my unit with a smart TV and then use my Verizon cellphone (unlimited data) and use Dishanywhere to stream my PVR to the smart TV. We tried this using Ipads instead of a TV and it worked great, just like sitting in our living room. Is anyone doing this successfully?
  • We've used our phones as hotspots and use DishAnywhere to access our our home DVR, on our two smart tv's.

Most campground wifi is not as good as our cell phones.
  • Verizon unlimited plans are limited to sreaming 480 resolution on phones, 720 on tablets.
Pay more for the beyond unlimited plan which is beyond unlimited to 720 on phones,1080 on tablets.
Both are subject to throttling above 22 gigs.

    Unlimited is seldom true.

Not sure what it's like in AZ, but here in PA there are plenty of areas where simply having cell signal is iffy, let alone data, be it Verizon or any of them. Same holds true for WV, MD, NY. Once you get 10 miles or so away from the major highways and interstates, add in some hills and mountains, so much for consistent service, especially anything close to fast enough to stream HD content.

Streaming is great until the flow stops. If TV was a high priority I would have satellite as a backup to the cell service or only go to places where I was 100% sure of coverage. 22 gigs does not go very far if you're streaming HD day in and day out for hours.
  • Dishanywhere does not work with my 211k box which I use for my tailgater.
  • I had planned on using Shaw Direct Free Range internet streaming TV when we travel to the US. The catch is, it's only supposed to be used in Canada. I can work around it by spoofing the ISP/Shaw with a US based IP address, but it's a pain because the free VPN don't offer much free bandwidth, and the ppu ones aren't free. Still, if push came to shove, the ppu VPN services aren't that expensive, that I can see. If TV becomes a must have priority.
Does Dish Anywhere check the user's IP address, when/if you're out of country? Might matter to some travelers. Maybe not an issue if you're using cell service to get internet.
  • Your new dish is dead? Think customer service and warranty!
  • DishTV changed their method of satellite lock-in a few years ago, and that killed a lot of dishes, including mine. All it took was a laptop, the correct cable to connect to the dish port inside the RV, and a few configuration commands to bring it back to life. You might check into this.
  • We have one of our two Dish Hoppers w/Sling installed at our upstate NY vacation cottage, and the other in our fulltime home/motorhome. When we're just stopping for an overnight, instead of setting up our portable tripod and dish sometimes, we just stream what we want to watch to the DishAnywhere app on the FireTVstick attached to our TV from the Hopper at the cottage. We use our AT&T unlimited 4G/LTE hotspot data plan for streaming in the motorhome. The cottage end uses a Spectrum 30/5 Mbps cable plan.
