There are pros and cons of parallel vs series when considering how batteries interact with each other under charge and when resting. I don't know if having the series link extra long or the parallel links extra long makes those factors better or worse.
Obviously the one long series wire is one wire, whereas the parallel would need two paths, but the neg path of those could be the frame, so it is still just the one wire needed.
