For a couple hundred dollars I can replace my converter and be done with it ... for the time being ... I hope. I don't think I can get into solar for a "couple hundred dollar's" and have it do much for us. Yes, that could be argued for people who camp in areas with less trees than we do. And remember, I already had the generators and I'd have needed to buy the batteries with both plans.
You're not out of the woods yet :).
100W solar - that you were contemplating for $450 incl. Trimetric-Bogart combo, but could be done for $200 - will not get you "much" in terms of charge amount, 20-30 AH a day at best.
But, without solar or shore power you won't be able to bring batteries higher than 80-85%, not within a reasonable generator time. For 3-4 days getting them to Full isn't too important.
About buying more batteries with both plans, with your small loads - not really.
You'll be fine with 2*6V if you carry a generator.
You "might" need more batteries if you go for 3-4 days and carry a small solar and no generator.
And you sure need more batteries if you go for 3-4 days and don't have any charging means.
