How ceiling looks like under the dome? I bet, a hole 1" or 2" diameter depending on sobriety of the worker - for wires, with a few tiny holes after tapping screws in 1/4" plywood. Won't be much noticeable if you plug and paint the hole and put some wood filler on. But I'd like keeping some overhead lights, just not the domes. Something that makes more diffused light. Those residential 120V fluorescent tubes make nice diffused light.
May be will get a cheap 2ft fluorescent fixture from Home Depot, complete with a nice diffuser, and replace 120V fluorescent tubes with This LED tube
Note that $80 is for 4 tubes. Each tube is 10W, i.e. brightness equivalent to 40W incandescent which is exactly one dome with 2 bulbs. Don't know where they are shipping from. There are some US-based stores, though their LED tubes are ~$40 each. Not a very common product for some reason, I see more sellers from Europe and Australia.
Mark, I recall under-cabinet pot lights from earlier posts, don't know if it was you. Are those IKEA pucks 12V?
