You are confusing Battery with shore power. IT TAKES 12 VOLTS TO OPERATE YOUR REFER. The shore power supplies 120 to your POWER CONVERTER and THAT supplies 12 volts to the refer. You do not have to have a battery connected, but you NEED a battery to help regulate the Power output from the converter. Doug
