As above, we never travel with the fridge on or gas not shut off at the tanks. As you might note from our signature, we've been at this a long while.
Longest trip we've made with unit off was 8.5 hours in ambient temps of an average of 98F. We had thermometers in both compartments. Freezer got up to 29F and the fridge got up to 41F. 2 "secrets". 1) NEVER open the compartments en-route and )2 Make sure they are as full as possible before departing. In our 15th year fulltiming we've never had a bite of spoiled food resultant from going down the road without benefit of refrigerant.
You will now hear from the folks who wouldn't think of traveling the road without the refer running. You can present them with all of the facts available and they will still do it because they can. Whatever works.
