Dometic Frig - Out Of Propane Then Won't Run On Shorepower

Hi All -

Have about a 3 year old Dometic Refrigerator in our new to us/used TT which was working fine on either shorepower or propane (Auto button selected) although we typically have shorepower. We recently had the refrigerator fan replaced (it was getting Loud) and since then if we run out of propane the frig stops cooling entirely. It is set on the Auto On button (although tried it both ways). I'm assuming the refrigerator has shorepower because the light comes on if you open the door (or maybe the light runs off off the deep cycle batteries?) Shorepower is definitely hooked up because the microwave and A/C run fine.

Our mobile mechanic said (without looking at it?!) that it needs a new board. Has anyone else encountered this or know of anything else that we should check before that VERY expensive step?

Thanks for any help!

:) How would one do that? Any of these gas absorption fridges I've seen have an AUTO mode - when it sees 120 vac that's what it runs on, if 120 vac is removed it automatically switches to gas. The only other option is a GAS mode one can use to force the fridge to gas even though 120 vac may still be present ... but there's no switch available which would allow one to "manually put it in AC mode". Care to clarify? :@

You must have good battery voltage too for it to work.

The fridge doesn't care where 12 vdc comes from ... if there's no battery or it's disconnected but the converter is operating then the fridge will get it's required 12 vdc. I seem to recall my Dometic DM2652 is rated to continue running until incoming DC voltage is far lower than I'd ever allow my battery to deplete and not anywhere near close to shutting down if the battery is at 50% or about 12 vdc. Care to clarify about this as well?
  • Not only check that the AC power cord is plugged into the outlet (in outside compartment) MAKE sure that the outlet is HOT....could be dead due to tripped circuit breaker or GFCI outlet.

Panel lights, interior lights & control work off 12V DC

Note: IF fridge is in 'AUTO' if will swap to GAS when no AC is available and would swap back to AC when power is restored.
    Can only manually select GAS

Generally the fridge is plugged into an outlet in the fridge compartment, not hardwired. Quite often this outlet is one of the GFCI protected outlets because it's in a compartment that's more or less exposed to outside dampness.

There may be a fuse for the AC circuit in the fridge. It's also possible that the heating element burned out. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you should do some basic troubleshooting before automatically assuming the board is bad if it turns out not to work with a proven good AC supply.

My first guess would be that it's just not getting AC power.
  • The guy who did the fan swears he rechecked it outside when we were not here and said it was plugged in and/or has power. Now I know the light runs on 12v, that helps me in trouble-shooting thank you - means I need to personally check both the outlet (assuming it is not hardwired) and make sure plug is secure. Plus at that point I can try the plug/unplug (either the frig or the whole TT) to see if it just needs a reset of some sort. Will start with that over the weekend and update this. Thanks!

BTW - to answer the "Check" indicator light question... that comes on when the propane is out or shut off (and that is also when the frig stops cooling too).
  • Turn it off. Then back on in Auto mode.

x2. The light runs off 12v.
  • Manually put it in AC mode and see what it does.
You must have good battery voltage too for it to work.
  • Make sure they plugged it back in when they reinstalled it, and make sure the outlet has power. Does the GAS light go off when plugged in?
