Dometic Microwave died

Our 11-year-old Dometic CDMW12B microwave quit heating yesterday. I figured that the cost to repair it would be higher than a new one, so I pulled the old one out, measured it and went looking for one that would fit the rather confined space provided in our Starcraft TT.

We found an LG LCS1112ST that was almost an exact fit. I removed the top and bottom mounting plates from the Dometic and mounted them on the LG, slid it in place, installed the mounting screws, plugged it in and it looks like it came in the RV.

Just thought I'd pass it along in case any of you fine folks have to replace your 1.1 cubic foot microwave.

Exactly the same thing happened to me a few years ago with the microwave oven in our previous KZ Spree. I however was and still am convinced it just didn't die a natural death all on it's own but rather was caused by a power line anomaly, perhaps a surge, perhaps a low voltage situation. Regardless, I now never plug into any source without protecting my current trailer's electrical system with a Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C. Had I invested in one years earlier I likely would never have found myself replacing that MW oven. :R
  • Our 15 year old Sharp MW started having display problems and no replacement parts were available. Like you, I took careful measurements and went shopping instead of laying out $250 for a new Sharp with the RV trim. Turned out an $88 Hamilton Beach MW from Walmart was an exact fit, and the original vent/trim went on perfectly with just some minor mods to the mounting brackets. It looks better than the original unit.
  • You just have to be aware on how the micro vents when replacing it. Many residential micros vent on the side and if you get one with a snug fit they overheat or damage the cabinet.

If your coach is 30-amp, watch the power consumption of the microwave. We have a the Samsung that was popular on RV's 10 years or so ago. There was a recall on the control pad, but ours was OK. So OK that it's big and fast like a home unit and that's the problem. Often have to shut the A/C off to use the microwave on our 30A service. I'd be happier with a smaller micro with less power draw. There are Inverter microwaves where a lower setting means less power consumption, but they're more expensive and seem to be less reliable than the ones that cycle full power to achieve a lower "cooking power."
