double conversion problems

Hi 23mikey,

The automation trips the gfi at the shore power outlet. I was trying an old work around from my MSW days when the reverse polarity fuses blew.

My RV behaves as if it were on shore power all the time (if I so desire it). I went to pure sine wave because I wanted to run the roof air from the battery bank and inverter. I'd love to beef up my solar to replace the energy I would be using. I've found an MPPT controller that can handle 1320 watts.

I use manual connections with male and female plugs so I have great flexibility and can reconfigure the system in seconds.

Hi Mr Wizard,

I'll be testing the Magnum with no load into two different GFI circuits on Thursday. Right now if I plug in the Magnum with the regular rv loads (fridge and heaters) it instantly trips the gfi at the house.

I'm not going to risk another set of reverse polarity fuses--they are too hard for me to change.

It is a matter of seconds to reconfigure my system. It's the darn reverse polarity fuses that are a pain in the behind.

Thanks for the reply Don. I agree it sounds like maybe that particular GFI box isn't playing well with the Magnum. From your description it sounds like you have many manual options to manage your power distribution, might you have better luck if you let the automation in the Magnum manage the power? That's the direction I was planning on, but I maybe be naieve(sp) in believing it's that simple. Also, you may have different requirements than I have. I just want to power the rig off battery/solar without losing any functionality.

anything with heavy load, but not nuwave cooking
to see if the Magnum trips the GFI

or do you mean, things are already unplugged, and too much trouble to reconnect

I've been wondering about that myself. Unfortunately the fair haired engineer who designed my RV put the converter below the power distribution center. It is not easy to get to the reverse polarity fuses and of course on the 9100 the wizard has to be disconnected to do so.

I've also not made it any easier because I have added two auxiliary shore power cords. Their female outlets "live" in the power distribution box.

I also have a hall effect watt meter so there is another "box" that counts the energy being used from all three shore cords.

I adore using the Nuwave for cooking. I did keep one hot plate as a back up.

It is #8 already--and a long run. The most I've seen is 37 amps.

I suppose I could use the wizard to force 13.2 volts.

I'm pretty sure the problem is some sort of DC backfeed from the Magnum. Or perhaps as Mr. Wizard suggests the combination of the Nuwave and Magnum.

Hi Mike,

Yes it is the hybrid model and I enjoy using it. However the Magnum appears to NOT like GFI outlets. So I was going back to my old model of using heavy draw items on the battery bank/inverter and replacing that energy from the converter.

Where there is no gfi the Magnum works tremendously well. It may also be the particular gfi outlet.

I use the Magnum to buffer start up surge on the air conditioner when I am running it (rarely) from the Yamaha 3000 sIEB generator. That way I can run the generator in the mountains on the eco setting.

The remote on the Magnum allows one to limit the demands on shore power. A 15 amp circuit is not supposed to be used at more than 80% of that value, so I'll dial it back to 14 amps (12 would be better).

Victron and one other company make true hybrid inverters. Xantrex has one but it doesn't blend the power from two sources--it jumps 100% to the battery bank and then transfers back to shore power.

Ever think you might be overworking the 9140?
Maybe reduce the wire to #8 to put continuous amps down to 30 or 35.

I wonder about the nuwave.. rapidly pulsing a heavy magnet/induction load, could cause lots feedback spikes on the inverter output power feeding the nuwave
Try your setup using an equal load but not the nuwave

Hi PT.....Question for you. Your Magnum inverter, is it the hybrid model? I was looking at using the hybrid in my new solar system so I could blend low amp shore power with the inverter to run AC loads like the A/C.

Is this what you were doing when you had your issue?
