duo therm issue

Was on a camping trip the last week and 2nd day into trip the air conditioner in living room quit working. The fan works but as soon as the compressor tries to kick in it throws the 20amp breaker in the breaker box. You can hear the compressor trying to kick in for about 2 to 3 seconds prior to tripping breakers. Any ideas?
  • Thanks for all the assistance on this issue. I replaced the starter capacitor and found that the old starter capacitor had burnt a hole in the run capacitor. I then had to purchase a new run capacitor. Total purchase of 2 capacitors was $45. Everything was hooked backed up today and Air is working great. Planning on a trip to Lakewood campground in Myrtle Beach on July 7 to really give the air a workout. This is our first time at this campground. Hopefully, I will have an event free vacation.
  • It will be fine. The small black item on top is a PTCR device, which works by getting hot (it conducts power until it heats up, which it does in a fraction of a second) The replacement will have a heavier duty PTCR installed.
  • pic of capacitorLooks like I was lucky there wasn't a fire the small capacitor is burnt up pretty good and wires melted to terminal. Any ideas what would cause this? I would guess compressor is still ok. Plan on replacing both capacitors.
  • I just got off the roof and removed the cover of the ac unit. I did not see anything that looked like a cylinder capacitor. I see the compressor and a small tank cylinder beside compressor. There is a metal box where electrical wires come out. Is this were capacitors are found? The unit is on a 2007 cedar creek.

My first thought is the start capacitor shorted.

I would agree, check the start capacitor. It will probably smell burned. If not that, the compressor may be bad.
