I have an electric mattress pad, which I use to take the chill out of the bed - and it's over a 3" costco mattress pad (over the mattress).
Add the down comforter and it's on for maybe 10 minutes and then the chill is out of the bed, DW is warmed up and the down comforter keeps the heat in.
The costco mattress pad (once the smell is out of it!) works extraordinarily well at keeping my body heat insulated from the cold.
Unfortunately, during the summer/warm months it sucks completely - but the DW is happy.
