Electric Cable

I am planning to run 10-2 UF-B cable about 100 ft so that I can plug my travel trailer in while at home. The trailer requires 30 amps.

I also want to add a regular 15 (or 20) amp outlet so that I could plug other things in when necessary. Can I pigtail this outlet off the 10 gauge 30 amp cable? Should I use 8 gauge wire for this? The other alternative coming to mind is running 10-3 cable instead to keep the outlets separate.

Thanks in advance for ideas/suggestions or things you did.

You would just install a 30 amp breaker. You want it to trip, if drawing more than 30amps.

Best to have outside box with breakers also. It will be easier to turn off breaker, when plugging in/removing plug. It is always best to plug RV into/out of a dead receptacle.

Good advice. The 30a breaker that I posted will give you two 30a circuits, one for the RV and the other feeding the 20a breaker on the post that controls the convenience outlet.

Be sure to use a double breaker and not individual 30a breakers...since these two circuits will have a shared neutral, they must be out of phase and the double breaker ensures that they are installed that way in the main panel box.
  • Hi,

I would go with #6 wire to allow for a 50 amp upgrade. Many RV's come with 50 now.
