The PDF offers good basic troubleshooting skills. The main fault that I observe with novices (even handy man types) is they tend to morph-imagine a simple problem into a nightmare of complexity. Solid, rational, progressive troubleshooting beats a hand of "Do this first" any day of the week. If a technician gambles on "luck" to troubleshoot the house will win.
