There was a book titled "Power and Grounding Techniques" by author ? Wiley where he said something to the effect of: "todays world of digital circuitry design is all about high frequencies where circuit geometry is the design criteria AND the only persons skilled in this HF field were amateur radio operators who design their own equipment."
That was quite a few years ago (late 70s) when the microprocessors were just catching on.
Edit: I think the author was Ralph Morrison, John Wiley was the publisher.
