Extend outlet with SJ cable

I think it would be fine for your application, especially if covered with split loom.

SJ, SJO, and SJOO cord insulation does not like ozone. I would not mount it near an electric motor that is permanently mounted and operates frequently. Nor any high voltage device that is an ozone generator. Not really a bigtime issue.

SJ will work. It's nice and flexible.

Check the outlet you want to "tap into". The outlets in our trailers are frequently thin, flemsy and have "push on" terminals that bite through the insulation and into the wire. That's fine (and cheap) for the original installation, but aggarvating for an "add on". Those type terminals also don't work well with an SJ type wire which has stranded conductors.
It may be easier for you to interrupt an AC line somewhere close and install a junction box and use good old wire nuts or other connections. It was for me.

oops... didn't see your last post on changing the outlet before. Good move (make sure it will fit).

I'm not looking for lighting as much as a place to plug my phone or iPad charger into at night. the outlet I would tap into is one for the bedroom TV. I'll either replace it with a box and standard outlet or just install a plug onto the end of the sj cable and plug it in. In essence making my new outlet an extension cord.

Why not just use one of the battery powered LED stick up lights in the closet. Some LED fixtures come with motion detector. Turns on when you reach in there.. Batteries will almost last forever with LED lights and then you won't have to worry about safety of running extension cords around the wall.

ALso you probably have not looked at your intended 120VAC RV receptacle you want to tap into. The standard RV receptacles are the thin ones with daisy chain pinched wire installation type. No easy way to tap into one of those...

That's what is used in my trailer from the factory for the wire runs to 120V circuits in the slide. It isn't in conduit either. So I'm assuming codes allow it to be used in applications where there is movement of the connection.

While code probably doesn't allow it's use in walls, in the open it may be ok.

I think you are supposed to use armored cable or conduit.
If I had the SJ cord I would probably just use it.

SJ will work fine.

I was wondering though, why not use Romex 14 gauge?
Maybe you could run it through that stick on channel like wire mold.

I've worked in metal fab shops all my life and seen it all,......
A three phase extention cord laying on the floor is perfectly legal, fork lifts running over it all day long, chunks of iron falling on it, guys tripping over it, all perfectly legal ! But the minute we hung a simple 115v extension cord to a machine up and out of the way, fastened it to the wall, it got sited by Osha ! Its stupid codes like this why I thrive on common sense !

I very much understand codes and work with them regularly. I can see why SJ wouldn't be used in sticks and bricks. Just for what I'm using it for I wasn't sure if there was some reason to not use it that I hadn't thought of. to me its going to be just a permanently mounted extension cord.
